I really wish this was not the case. If you look at the hours on the boat assume a car has the same hours 410 then at an average speed of 70 MPH only equates to 30000 miles on the car.
A lot of gillnetters fall into this category.
How many hours on a boat engine is a lot. Most marine engine manufacturers recommend an oil change every 50 engine hours. Our 1000 hour boat serviced every 50 hours would have had the same 20 oil changes. Similar levels of wear can be assumed in this example.
Some newer vehicles have an engine hour meter. Here is a picture of the hour meter on one of our shop trucks. Anything between 300hrs and 3000hrs is a lot depends on if you get lucky or not as to how long yours will last.
I really wish this was not the case. I would eventually love to repower my boat with twins and hit the stream routinely. Problem is right now I dont have confidence that twin outboards are any more reliable than my 1 Mercruiser.
Just curious what you consider is a lot of hours to have on a boat. Ive seen the in the 500-600 hrs range I thought that was a lot. It would depend on how well it is maintained.
When my plane was rebuilt in 98 the airframe total time was 7657 hrs. It now has over 8000 hrs. The average marine gasoline engine runs for 1500 hours before needing a major overhaul.
The average marine diesel engine will run for more than three times that long and log an average 5000 hours under the same conditions. The number of hours that a marine engine runs is very dependent on the amount and quality of maintenance over the years. The average boater uses his or her boat about 50 hours per season so use that as a good rule of thumb.
If a boat is four years old then about 200 hours would be about normal. If its five years old 250 is about right and so forth. The average use for a recreational boater is about 50 hours per season.
When estimating hours on a used boat or motor you will want to estimate around 50 hours per year. This can change depending on the owners location. A place where the boating season lasts longer can mean more hours on the motor.
Nope not a lot. If it were a cartruck average 40mph thats 24000miles. Many weekend pleasure boaters do 50-100 hrs per season.
Have your antennae tuned in to whether theyve been clocked. Or a period laid up. And anyway an engine surveyoil analysis is generally worthwhile when buying that sort of boat.
Some commercial operators getting 2000-3000 hours out of their four-stroke outboards but these are usually the lower HP models. People often compare hours on an old boat with commercial operators. However commercial boats do their hours quickly and early in.
10000 hours seems to be the upper limit on most Yanmars. Of course you do have to send the injectors out for recalibrationrebuild about every 2000 hrs. And the Injector pump out at 5000 hrs.
If you want a perfect engine. Most people say average engine life of a 350 57 class engine in a tow boat is between 2000-2500 hours. 700 hours on a 10-15 year old boat that is well kept is no big deal.
I just bought a 1998 with 900 hours on it. The use of the engine and the location. For boats that live in Florida and get used regularly we would say that the average number of hours for a boat will be around 2000 hours.
That is just the average number of hours that are going to be on a 5-10-year-old engine that has been used regularly throughout the years. An engine block that has been heated-cooled heated-cooled heated-cooled sucesfully many times Like a old MOPAR Big-Block in a metro PD carThats a seasoned block made for great builders. It wasnt the total miles that made them sought-after builders it was the seasoning of the block lent to more stability as it had more cycles.
If you look at the hours on the boat assume a car has the same hours 410 then at an average speed of 70 MPH only equates to 30000 miles on the car. The old rule of thumb for engine life with moderate duty cycle is 1000 to 2000 hours and about half of that for the outdrive. Like the truck a boat with 745 engine hours has many years of optimal running performance left.
In fact its just past getting broken in. There are a few things to consider when looking at boat hours. Unless you are looking at a really high hour boat 2000 hours there are typically very few drawbacks to the number of hours a boat has.
However the range can be from 5 - 200 hours annually. One of the most common questions we get when handling a used boat inquiry is how many hours does it have. There are a number of opinions about boat engine hours most of them siding in the lower is better camp.
If the speed is not reduced the engines life will be shortened often quite radically. My guess is that engine life in planing hulls is more like 12000 to 15000 hours given good operating practice proper sizing and good maintenance. A lot of gillnetters fall into this category.
In this video we address the misconception of engine hours on a used inboard towboatFor a more in-depth reading of comparing boat hours to miles on a car. PAR Yacht DesignerBuilder. I was told once a very rough guide to marine gas engine wear is 1 hour in a boat is equal to 100 hours in a car.
This means at 1000 hours the engine has 100000 miles on it which is pretty reasonable. With newer engines tolerances are much better so getting a gas marine engine to 3000 hours isnt unusual. On average an outboard motor will run about 1500 hours or 7 to 8 years.
Each outboard motor will be different but if you keep up maintenance and take care of the motor it can last much longer. Depending on our needs as anglers different outboards will be better for us. It has 400 hours on it.
It has had the gimbal bearing replaced and the lower unit on the outdrive replaced due to an accident of some type and not normal wear. I have been told by another boat owner that 400 hours is a lot for a Merc IO setup. I would think that this V6 setup should last well over 1500 hours before major overhaul would be needed.
Always ask how many hours the engine has on it and dont forget to dr. When buying a boat it is good to know how boat engine hours affect the used boat value. Subsequently question is what is considered a lot of hours on a boat motor.
The average marine gasoline engine runs for 1500 hours before needing a major overhaul. The average marine diesel engine will run for more than three times that long and log an average 5000 hours under the same conditions. Many thanks to Lou Dr ST squirrel and Brock.
I dont ride it too much so the high dollar oil doesnt bother me. I will keep up the maintemance and enjoy my need for speed has diminished with age but I understand about the motor losing power. I read somewhere that those motors are only good for 200 hours and that seemed low to me.
