I got the same recall notice with my trailer and i havent took it in to get looked at but what yours sounds like is as you are backing the boat in the water you are compressing the surge brake but the elec overide does not let the brakes on the trailer engage when the boat is off the trailer your obviously losing all that weight and you pull the vehicle forward the elec over ride. To pump the fluid from the master cylinder out there is a couple of different ways of doing it.
In a trailer surge brake system the pump is located on the trailer-as part of the hitch assembly.
How to bleed surge brakes on boat trailer. When trying to bleed surge brakes on a boat trailer it is difficult to move the actuator enough to move the fluid through the bleed screws. Here is a tip f. BEST FAST Way to Bleed Trailer Surge Brakes - YouTube.
Proper bleeding of brake system can be checked by performing one of the following procedures. 1 Temporarily disconnect the tow vehicletrailer electrical connector and back up the trailer without the energizing the backing solenoid valve to verify brakes are working. 2 Pull trailer forward and stop suddenly pin on side of actuator should.
Start bleeding procedure on the brake furthest from the master cylinder. At the brake assembly connect a transparent bleeder hose to bleed screw fitting on wheel cylinder and submerge free end into a container partially filled with brake fluid. Do not reuse this fluid.
Once I was satisfied with the reservoir I moved to the rear to deal with the contaminated fluid still in the lines and calipers. Using a 38 wrench I opened the rear bleeder valve on each brake caliper. On a clean system you can gravity bleed the fluid from your brakes.
I wasnt surprised when I couldnt. Bleeding Surge Brakes To build on Arts suggestion theres a simple way to prevent having to go back and forth from the coupler to the brake bleeder. Fill the bottom of a bottle a 12 oz water bottle works good with brake fluid a few inches is fine.
I made a vacuum bleeder with a section of hose a 25 gallon bucket with lid and my shop vac. Took the bucket put about a 2 hole in the center of the lid and a 12 hole near the edge of the lid. Using 6 of 14 line put 2 in the bucket thru the small hole hooked the other end up to.
In a trailer surge brake system the pump is located on the trailer-as part of the hitch assembly. This special sliding hitch assembly is called a surge brake actuator. It has a master cylinder built into it but instead of using your foot to operate it it uses the weight the momentum of the trailer to do the pumping.
When the air bubbling stops inside the master cylinder install a bleeder hose on the bleeder screw of the first wheel cylinder to be bled. Start with the rear axle on tandem axle trailers. Submerge the other end of the hose in a glass container of brake fluid so that air bubbles can be observed.
How to bleed and adjust your trailer brakesThank you for watching. Yes there is a way to back up your boat trailer and keep the surge brake actuator T43329007K from applying pressure to the trailer brakes. You will need an electric lockout solenoid T4748800 which will close when you shift.
Bleed your Trailer Brake System. After replacing the backer and tightening the brake line to the wheel cylinder follow these steps to bleed your trailer brake system. Remove the master cylinder cap and fill the reservoir to three-quarters full with brake fluid.
To manually bleed the system you will need two people to make the job easier. This pumps brake fluid into the trailer braking system. When the air bubbling stops inside the master cylinder install a bleeder hose on the bleeder screw of the first wheel cylinder or disc brake caliper to be bled.
Be sure to use the bleeder screw on top of the caliper. Start with the rear axle on tandem axle trailers. Got to try out the new solenoid today with out the boat on the trailer.
Dang it didnt fix my lockup problem. Trailer still locks the brakes and slams up and down when the boat is not loaded on it. It was mentioned to me that there is a fitting that can be put in the brake line itself to restrict fluid flow and correct this problem also.

Surge Brakes Leaking If you have the bypass type lockout solenoid you should see a short piece of hose from the solenoid back to the master cylinder. If the hose is cracked broken or missing it can leak from there when you are in reverse.
Like Bruce said once you get the leak fixed you will need to properly bleed the brakes. The disk brakes need to have rubber hoses to them if the caliper is a floating design which more than likely your are. If you dont the hard brake line will pull the caliper and cause it to drag.
Normal for the hub to get hot after you brake. It should not get hot if you arent braking. How do you backup a trailer with surge brakes.
Yes there is a way to back up your boat trailer and keep the surge brake actuator T43329007K from applying pressure to the trailer brakes.
