If the Players rams a boat into a Great Tree Trunk it will rain Twigs Cut Grass and Logs. Just so how do I know if my boat foam is waterlogged.
This is especially a problem if the boat stays in the water and there is a crack below the waterline.
How to tell if boat is waterlogged. Just so how do I know if my boat foam is waterlogged. You can tell if foam has water by its weight. If the foam is not sealed and water gets into it it can stay humid and rot the wood around it.
It can add many pounds of weight for no reason. Likewise can fiberglass get waterlogged. How to check to see if a boat is waterlogged.
First use a small diameter drillbit and make some test holes in the deck to check for stringers. Then drill out a 2 hole in the deck between the stringers with a hole saw attachment. That gives you access to the foam.
Perette and Group say that water generally enters the core through loose ill-fitting or improperly bedded deck hardware seat and rod holder bases stanchions hinges and locker latches. If there are open drill holes scattered about the deck you know theres a good chance the core is soaked says Perette. In either case it would be wise to provide a way for the bilge to drain out the transom hole.
Most boats dont do this and they become waterlogged. This means weep hole at each athwart support so the water can roll aft to a drain. Yes the blue foam will work but again its not necessary.
The manufactures are required to install it but you dont. It would appear that any wetness or softness of the foam should be fairly localized and easily repaired as Tom has done and that the possibility of the water migrating through the entire hull foam structure creating a waterlogged hull is not going to occur in a Whaler. Jim I certainly agree that ANY damage to the hull should not go unrepaired.
ONLY drill the holes at the lowest point of the hull at eh angle at which you are going to drain it from. Drilling holes to airate the foam will not work to dry the foam out. The water will naturaly find its way to the lowest point in the foam cavity and run out of what ever hole is there.
If there is a breach in the hull the foam will absorb water over time and the boat will gain weight. This is especially a problem if the boat stays in the water and there is a crack below the waterline. Or if the breach is inside the boat towards the back where water sits.
The Waterlogged Biome generates in the middle of the ocean usually in Swell Rough waters though this is still up for debate. This Biome generates with thick tree trunks that hold up a canopy known as Great Tree Trunk. If the Players rams a boat into a Great Tree Trunk it will rain Twigs Cut Grass and Logs.
Create weep holes so water can run down and out of the compartments. In this style of boat it would be best to use sheet foam and keep is slightly off the hull so water can run out. Trap it in there and it will break down the foam and start to allow the foam to absorb moisture.
Use the Search feature on the Forum and you will find a number of posts dealing with a heavy hull ie. Waterlogged and how to dry them out. For the record the deck and hull of a Sunfish are glued together with fiberglass resin and a lot of temoporary clamps and the metal aluminum trim that covers the joint is not structural and just protects and hides the joint.
The easiest way to tell if your surfboard is becoming waterlogged is by paying attention to the weight. Before you head out for a surf weigh your board. After getting back home make sure that your surfboard is completely dry and free of sand and then weigh it again.
Which means your floor will have to come up. Most old boats did incorporate a drain in the bottom but once that foam is water logged it is of zero help. The foam I removed from my 21 Larson probably had well over 1000lbs added weight due to all the water it was holding.
The only way to know for sure that a lower unit is completely sealed is to run the boat then look at the lower unit oil to make sure it doesnt have a milky appearance. If the seller is okay with it crack the drain screw a hair and let a little oil drain out onto your fingers so you can look at it. How could I tell if the boats water logged and is that alright if the deck in the back in a couple of spots moves up and down a littleit does not feel like the foam is soft but that their maybe be a little air between the deck and the bottom foamIf the boat was waterlogged youd know.
